Rhonda Sharpe

Owl (Kurrkurra), 2023  |  RKS009

Soft sculpture  |  45 x 50 x 9cm

Rhonda Sharpe was born in Mparntwe (Alice Springs) in 1977. She lived sometimes at Kwale Kwale and sometimes at Trucking Yards Town Camp where she went to Yipirinya School.

Rhonda discovered her interest and passion for making soft sculptures when she followed her aunty Dulcie Sharpe into the art room one day. From initially watching the other artists around her, Rhonda has developed her skills, style and subject matter to reflect her own personal journey. From delicate stitched creatures to figures that depict profoundly honest personal stories, her works celebrate her love for her art, her family, her country, and storytelling.

Rhonda is part of Yarrenyty Arltere Artists. This is a thriving creative hub that has nurtured the emergence of an entirely new form of art-making. The artists from here create contemporary soft sculptures and experiment with various other mediums as they explore and express their experience, place and culture. Yarrenyty Arltere Artists was born out of the Yarrenyty Arltere Learning Centre, which in 2020 marked 20 years of service. The Centre has had an immeasurable impact, strengthening the community, building capacity of artists and elevating culture.
